The Brief
A final year project to produce a proposal for an independent, occasional magazine, about an aspect of visual culture.
Approach
Found is a new quarterly magazine that will have 8 different articles, showing off the work of 8 different female designers from around the world. These could be graphic designers, illustrators, creative directors, typesetters, or artists. The mission is to find designers from all over the world, that we should know about, and publish them in a magazine. It is a fun way to discover and share the talented work of what is out there.
The idea to do it on female designers started from a conversation happening at my university. Our teacher asked the class who our favourite female designers were and no one could answer. It has been a male-dominated discipline in what we learn in history lessons, and in the workplace. This magazine is a space for finding your favourite female designer.
Articles that have inspired this work
Trip to Mag culture
The first part of this project involved going and getting inspired. Analysing other magazine typography using examples. To get inspired I went to Mag culture in London to see how others are designing independent magazines.
The process
We continue to experiment and establish some working decisions about your grid, body text & display typography. Paying close attention to the grid. But also covering formats, established and intuitive rules of proportion, composition, white space, grids, and baseline grids.
Reflection
If I were to approach this project again, I would make sure to have a set colour way throughout the branding of the magazine. The reason why I did not set this out before, is because I wanted each article colour to be dropped in from the illustrations use. This was so that the article looked sensitive to the design, not distracting it with the branding of the magazine. As you can see this provides a stark change in the flip through - pink to bright yellow. It is something to think and reflect on whether it works for branding of the magazine.
