Human trafficking awareness stand
There are currently in the world 45 million slaves. My hope for this project was to raise awareness on the realities of human trafficking.
This was done by having an exhibition stand with a virtual reality (VR) headset to transport people into the shoes of another, someone who was trafficked.
Challenges
Some challenges with tackling human trafficking through design:
● It can add to stereotypes
● The design could be not fully representative
● The danger of mis-communication
● Could show graphic images unsuitable for children
My project must be ethically and socially responsible while also breaking down stereotypes. As a result, I use the metaphor of "doors" in this project as human trafficking is often happening right outside in our towns and cities. I'm emphasising that it's all around us and can happen to anyone; it also happens behind closed doors. I also thought VR would be effective because it does not allow you to see the person's face. This eliminates any stereotypes about their appearance. My project aims to provide the viewer with an opportunity to view reality from a different angle.
Before rework
The picture below shows a mini prototype of how the stands would work.
What changed before reworking: the text was rewritten to make it more engaging for the audience. The message was changed because, while it said "on your doorstep," it didn't do enough to make it relatable. So I considered the order in which I presented information. The message is now attempting to 'hook' the audience and be the first thing people read before seeing supporting details.
